Hurricane Eugene grew into a Category 3 storm in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico on Sunday, but forecasters said it was not expected to threaten land.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 kph) at midafternoon. It was centered about 555 miles (890 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula and was moving toward the north-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph).
The center said Eugene might strengthen a bit more during the night but would then begin losing power. It was forecast to stay well offshore before dissipating late in the week after moving over colder waters.
